The advent of Blu-ray technology has led to the introduction of discs with high storage capacity, which meet the demand resulting from rapid growth of high-definition television (HDTV).
Blu-ray discs get their name from blue laser technology. The color of the blue laser is its shorter wavelength. The blue laser has a wavelength of 405 nm, compared to the wavelength of 650 nm for DVD which uses red laser technology. The advantage of a blue laser with a wavelength shorter mean that you can write data in the grooves of smaller and therefore greatly increase the amount of data on the disk.
Blu-ray discs offer storage capacities ranging from three to five times higher than the capacity of a standard recordable DVD disc, enabling the recording, rewriting and playback of high definition video (HD).
